Last night, a war raged in my bedroom. The mosquitoes have been terrorizing me every night, and thanks to their co-ordinated night strikes I now have insomnia. I haven’t slept over 4 hours for the last 3 nights, and I decided I wasn’t going to stand for it any longer. I actually climbed out of bed, turned the lights on, and started hunting them down. I was out for blood. I must have killed over 10 in the first battle. Eventually, I couldn’t find anymore so I lied back down, but I was actually just playing possum. As soon as I heard they were close again, I sprung out, lights on, and went back to work smashing their stupid little bodies. Against the wall, clapping them out of the air, I was making tons of noise. If Lama had woken up and come in, it would have looked hilarious because I was jumping around and climbing over my bed in my underwear. The walls were spattered in blood (my blood, those lousy thieves) by the time I was done. I think by morning, I had spent over an hour running around and clapping like a rabid lunatic.
I went back to sleep around 5 am and overslept breakfast and was almost late for getting ready and leaving. We went to UNATEK to do our thing (meet Sigfried and check email/internet), and then I went alone back to the repair shop. I called Gatera, he promptly picked me up and took me down. Soldeto wasn’t there again, and again they told me it wasn’t ready. First they said come back in 2 hours, then come back in the afternoon, then come back at 8 pm, and I said, “Look, I am in no hurry here to get it. I just don’t want to come here again if it’s not done. Call me when it’s done.” Again, I wasn’t upset because it was just fun moto-ing back and forth.
We went home for lunch, and on the way we ran into Antoinette Masengesho who wrote her thesis on the Water Hyacinth and is one of the people I will be interviewing for the documentary. It was good to put a face with the name and schedule our interview. We were already scheduled to meet Josephine, the Vice Mayor of Kibungo tomorrow morning, and we planned to meet with Antoinette after that.
After lunch we did a bit of work but I was exhausted due to my late night battle with the mosquitoes. I was useless so I decided there was no point in being awake. Lama woke me up 2 hours later to ask if I wanted to head to the internet café and I said no, I had nothing to do on the internet anyway, I just wanted to stay and sleep. So they took off, but I couldn’t fall back asleep. I got up and edited, animated and pumped Saul Williams really loud. Eventually through the music I heard banging at the door. I got up and checked and it was Alysse, but the keys weren’t in any of the doors and I couldn’t let her in. Simultaneously I realized I couldn’t get out either. Lama had taken the keys so I was locked in the house. It suited me fine.
We had a late dinner together, and despite my afternoon nap, I was dead tired after eating. We all retired to our rooms, and for the first time in Kibungo, I fell asleep without hearing a single a mosquito.
